Receipts for over $80,000
This was a MEGA dollar build with RECEIPTS
for over $80,000 from the build of this fantastic truck. Every receipt is in the “documentation album” that goes
with the truck. You will know what the parts are and when they were purchased …. very important on hotrods, it is like
having the instruction manual. Purchase a rod without this history and you are running blind.
The $80k invested did NOT include the cost
to build the DINER on WHEELS trailer or the cost to restore the small cooler.
Purpose built to have a refined “old
school look” while incorporating a modern driveline that would be simple, reliable, safe & fuel efficient. A GMC
donor truck was used in the build, so it will be a GMC title but it is finished as a Chevy.
Built
by well known Texas shop
Built by well-known award winning shop, HATFIELD RESTORATIONS, in Canton, Texas. Some of the top show cars in the country have come
out of this shop. If you are familiar with the “Goodguys show circuit”, you have probably seen some of their killer
show cars.
This
truck, however, was built to be driven cross-country in COMFORT, NOT to be rolled off trailers to collect trophies. The undercarriage was
NOT finished to be shown with mirrors, and the engine bay was NOT covered in “BLING”. I have nothing against
these things, just trying to give an accurate picture of the intended use of this truck.
It was built to look great but it was equally important that
it have REAL WORLD cross country capabilities. And it does. Go anywhere, any time of year, in confidence and comfort.
Go
anywhere with confidence
Simple reliability & good gas mileage were of key importance given the distances in which I planned to
travel in this truck. With that goal in mind, a “no-nonsense” driveline was chosen and it has proven itself over 2,700 trouble free miles.
I purchased this truck approximately three
years ago to launch my new web-site, MyRod.com …. since that time I have made numerous multi state trips with
my wife in this little jewel and we have enjoyed every minute. On these trips we averaged 19 to 21 MPG! Not bad for a
hot rod pickup truck !
The
motor is a professionally built 305 out of an IROC Camaro. For simplicity’s sake, I went with an Eldrebrock 4-bbl carb
and matched aluminum intake. The motor was built with a mild RV cam and, consequently, it runs silky smooth with ample power
and accelerates with authority. The transmission is a turbo 350 and the rear-end is a “DISC brake Positive track”
out of a 79 Trans Am with a 3:08 highway gear.
It will cruise all day long at 70mph with the AC on and never get hot. If heat is what you need,
it will warm you on the coldest of days.
It has a Camaro front clip so it handles great, steers with the palm of one hand, AND the 4-wheel power DISC brakes will stop it with complete confidence.
It has a hidden kill switch for security.
Paint /
people love this truck
High dollar “Spies Hecker” German paint
(this
is NOT primer,
and it is NOT what you commonly see on rat rods called hot rod black).
This truck was painted by an award wining shop using high
quality Spies Hecker paint. This is a very expensive paint job. Commonly referred to as black suede, this is the hardest finish
to get right. Simply put, NOTHING, not even high gloss black shows the imperfections like SUEDE black (sometimes called satin
black). If a vehicle has the slightest flaw – it will show. This body was blocked to PREFECTION.
Only the best paint shops can give you
a truck this straight and a suede black finish this nice.
The old school “pin striping” was done by a well known local artist. It really looks great against the suede finish
and really sets the truck off. I cannot tell you the number of people who have photographed the pin striping.
Interior
The interior is not only COMFORTABLE,
it is truly beautiful and a real crowd pleaser.
The late model “contoured GM seat” is covered with the “Corinthian leather”
used by GM on the C5 Corvette. The custom Ostrich inserts look great.
The cabin is amazingly quiet for this vintage truck – you can
easily have conversations and enjoy the sound system. The carpet was custom made for this truck, not a cheap kit. Beneath
the carpet is sound deadener insulation.
The sound system is hidden away in the glove box and, like the AC, it does NOT distract from the very
cool look of the un-cut dash. The modern Stewart Warner gauges have a “period correct look” but give an accurate
picture of what’s going on with the motor.
All the glass is NEW and it’s crystal clear (only rear curved glass is original).
COLD
AC & great Heat
The AIR CONDITIONING is very tastefully hidden including the control knobs. The AC blows strong & COLD and the
heat is just as awesome. This system is very well engineered into this truck.
The modern SANDIN compressor is the rotary type and does not
put a drag on the motor. You can drive this car any time of the year.
Tires & Wheels
The best rated whitewall money can buy.
American Classic wide white wall RADIAL tires sold by Coker. This is the set I showed the truck with, so they remain
show quality, new in appearance.
The wheels are American Racing Salt Flats with the optional “spinners”.
Bed
Floor & Bed Rails
The floor in the bed is ¼ inch solid steel covered with
checker patterened industrial vinyl. The floor was built to haul a bobber motorcycle or cafe racer but never had one
in it. The cool checker patterned floor in the bed matches the floor on the custom built “Diner on Wheels” trailer.
I took the Diner on Wheels to shows and events, as it is a guaranteed crowd favorite & it allows me to bring shade and
the comforts of home to every show.
The ONE OF A KIND custom fabricated “bed rails” were built specifically for this truck and incorporate
the “swan neck” mounts common to this era. The rails have very bright “brake lights” mounted in the
ends that make the tuck extremely visible when stopping and, therefore, much safer. Dozens of truck lovers have gone ga-ga
over these very cool rails.
Diner on Wheels
This was an expensive trailer to build, but it has been worth
every penny. Not only is it practical in what it will do for you…..
it STEALS THE SHOW wherever we go. Everybody wants to take pictures
of it.
The red
Coke box is from the early ‘50’s and goes perfectly with the red accents on the truck.
It is not only cool looking, it also is
super practical and will make all your shows and events more comfortable. The Coke box has a lockable “storage compartment”
at its bottom – I use it to haul my luggage when I travel. Of course it has a giant “cooler” on top for
food & drinks – you can also store luggage in the cooler area.
The bar stools allow you to set high enough to view all the show activity
around you and keep you off the hot concrete. The LARGE umbrella does a great job blocking the sun …. no matter how
the sun moves, the umbrella TILTs as needed to block the changing position of the sun – very cool and a real life
saver on those hot days.
It
also includes a portable / mountable BBQ grill that mounts on the front. This is great for tailgate parties and it is unbeatable for
lounging at car shows and special events.
Seriously ….. this rig is awesome.
Minor negatives
All vehicles, even high dollar restorations
will have minor flaws, especially if they have been driven. This vehicle has been driven approximately 3,000 miles. There
are some very slight scratches and probably other imperfections due to usage, however there is nothing that
detracts from its overall front to back excellent appearance.
Everything Works
This is a ready to go, turn key, no issues
truck. Everything works. Fly in and drive it home.
