Approximately 300 miles since restoration
Freshly restored, rust free, California car with factory “driveline”
upgrades making it the ultimate MGA driver. Drive it effortlessly at today’s highway speeds!
Better, smoother and faster than ANY stock example.
Mechanical enhancements
The experience behind the wheel is excellent. Please watch the
“TEST DRIVE” Video.
To handle
modern freeway speeds, the car was refitted with a MGB 1800 cc “5 Main Bearing
Engine” (rebuilt a little over 300 miles ago by the meticulous and talented Dan
Shockey when he was a mainstay of the California “Bay Area” MG club).
Also updated the tranny with an early model 5-speed OVERDRIVE MGB gearbox (a spendy unit) that is smooth and solid. A machinist fabricated a custom adapter
for the gearbox, so it bolts right into original mount -- no cutting or welding done to frame; it’s unmolested and
entirely original.
With this power plant and overdrive -- unlike any stock “MGA” on the road -- the
car will cruise at 75-80 mph smoothly and easily, without the buzz and vibration of the original. If you are familiar
with the cars in their stock form you understand the disappointments at speed.
Rebuilt front dampers (Apple Hydraulics). The front end is tight
and solid -- it handles wonderfully, sharp and predictable cornering. The tires are the best money can buy. Also has a great
factory sound from the new muffler.
Brand
new Dayton “72 spoke” chrome wheels with new speed rated
Vredestein radials (injection molds still on the tires) …. this premium quality “tire and wheel upgrade” was almost $3,000 alone.
Rewired to 12-volt negative earth for greater reliability. New starter. The car whirrs
to a rapid start on the first try, every time, cold, and runs beautifully. Since it's never driven in the wet, the wipers
aren't connected (I have the original motor, though I've never tried to run it).
Paint and body work
The body was professionally stripped to bare metal by Technics of San Bruno, CA (a
first-rate operation). Upon stripping, the body showed NO accident damage and NO rust damage
-- all very clean and straight. The sills had already been replaced, and are still rust-free. All prior
(surface ONLY) rust removed from the frame and floorboard “support flanges” replaced as needed and the metal was
then encapsulated, primed and painted. Pictures of the process included with the car. New floorboards
installed (from marine grade wood, better than original) with original style screws, coated and kept completely dry ever
since. Inside and out, it's cancer-free (a RARE find in an MGA).
Before installing the carpet, the floor and tranny cover were wrapped with heat and sound deading material. Far
less noise and heat coming into the interior than with a stock MGA.
Technics applied the correct Old English White paint over the
properly prepared body. The finish has a high gloss wet look. Good alignment of doors, bonnet and
boot. All the bright work (stainless & chrome) is new or mint in appearance. The
car is definitely a head turner and a crowd pleaser. The engine bay is clean; however, it was left in
its original paint (matches the car, but not fresh like outer body).
New body rubber throughout. New windshield.
New interior including carpet, cockpit rail leather, and seat covers. Top was not replaced but it is still nice.
Also includes side windows and optional tonneau cover.
While it is a VERY nice show/driver,
with no surprises, it is not a perfect $40k concours example, nor is it priced like one. This car was built to be driven.
If you want an “eye-popping” MGA that you can actually get on the freeway
and go with confidence, then don’t miss this car. A lot of money and talent went into this
car to make it a superior driver to the typical MGA. A genuine pleasure at any speed, it is much more
robust and vastly superior to any stock example.
